About us:

 Twin Sisters Mobile Market is a 501(c)3 nonprofit mobile farmers market. Our custom mobile market truck delivers farm-fresh produce to four underserved Whatcom County “food desert” locations. Our mission is to connect our community to high-quality, local food, and to strengthen the small Whatcom farms that grow it. TSMM is a membership organization, governed by a Board of Directors composed of at least 50% farmer-members. Our membership of over 18 small, local businesses includes farmers, ranchers, fishers, and food processors.

Summary: 

The Market Manager (MM) is responsible for the seasonal planning, coordination, staffing, administration, communication, compliance, and execution of Twin Sisters Market (TSMM) operations. The MM works closely with farmer-members, volunteers, staff, tribal partners, and the board to ensure equitable crop planning, smooth day-to-day operations, effective outreach, and adherence to grants and program deliverables. This role blends administrative organization, on-the-ground logistics, and people management to sustain a mission-driven, community-focused market system.

Core Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Staff & Volunteer Management:  Hire, train and supervise a team of up to 3 Market Leads (part time, paid staff)  and 6 volunteers, and a Social Media Coordinator. Manage time-off requests and ensure adequate staffing coverage for our 4 market locations (Nooksack, Deming, Kendall & Birchwood on Saturday & Sunday June-October) and potential future locations.  The market manager is responsible for working at least one market shift per week. 

  • Market Operations: Oversee the operations of the market, ensuring the truck, aggregation site, and other infrastructure is maintained, fully stocked, and in good working order throughout the season. The MM is the lead on all logistics and equipment organization for the market, and is also in charge of placing weekly orders of vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, and other items sold at the market.

  • Crop Planning & Member Coordination: Build and maintain relationships with our 15+ farmers and producers. Lead the annual pre-season crop planning process. Assign crops equitably, update pricing based on market research, and maintain member records and compliance (licenses, insurance, certifications).

  • Administration & Compliance: Maintain TSM files and tools (Google Drive, payroll, scheduling). Submit grant-related reports, and manage subscriptions and tech (Totilpay, Square, hotspots, tablets, etc.).

  • Outreach & Communications: Oversee marketing and outreach (social media, newsletters, press releases, flyers). Update website and promotional materials. Represent TSM at events and collaborate with tribal and community partners.

  • Season Close-Out: Wrap up markets, clean and store equipment, cancel seasonal services, complete grant reporting, and coordinate end-of-season acknowledgments.

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in any combination of:

    • Farmers market operations or local food systems

    • Program or project management

    • Volunteer/staff supervision and scheduling

    • Community outreach or customer service

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and time-management skills

  • Proficient with Google Drive, Canva, social media tools, and digital scheduling platforms

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively

  • Commitment to equity and access in local food systems

  • Valid WA driver’s license and clean driving record

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of local/regional agricultural systems, food justice work, and food safety practices

  • Experience managing or implementing grant-funded programs

  • Experience executing contracts and completing data-based program reporting

  • Comfort with Squarespace, Mailchimp, Totilpay, Square, and/or QuickBooks

  • Multilingual (especially Spanish) a plus

Work Conditions:

  • Hybrid role: part desk-based/admin and part hands-on physical work and the distribution of work varies based on the season.

  • Requires working a ~10-hour shift every weekend during the market season (June–October).
    Must be able to lift 40 lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Must have reliable transportation; mileage to locations outside of normal work locations reimbursed

  • Role includes driving a 20’ market truck and coordinating site logistics.

  • Occasional evening meetings and seasonal flexibility required.

Compensation: 

  • Part-time, hourly position at $25 per hour, averaging 20 hours per week (January–November).

  • For up to three weeks before market opening (typically mid-May–early June), hours may increase to 40 per week.

  • Six- to eight-week winter hiatus (December–mid-January).

  • Mileage reimbursed at $0.67 per mile for duties outside regular work sites.

  • Access to surplus market produce and employee discounts.

  • Must be available Saturdays from approximately 7:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; remaining hours are flexible and can be worked remotely.

  • TSMM values work-life balance and supports flexible scheduling whenever possible. Up to six market days off per season (roughly one weekend per month) may be taken with advance approval and coverage arranged.
