small farms. big impact.

Our mission

Our mobile market truck brings healthy, locally grown produce to three weekly Whatcom County communities experiencing food apartheid.” People who live in these areas have limited access to healthy food sources.

WE INCREASE ACCESS TO HEALTHY, LOCAL FOOD
& SUPPORT THE SMALL FARMERS WHO GROW IT.

Our mission is to increase access to fresh, nutritious food in Whatcom County. We work to build a more equitable and resilient food system in our county’s food insecure areas by offering hyper-local markets that adapt to the unique needs of each community we serve. We support and strengthen small local farms by providing a convenient, profitable, and rewarding sales outlets for local farmers and food producers. Our neighborhood markets help our farmers develop relationships and grow their capacity to produce local food.

why we stand out

Our farmer-led model that benefits our farmers and our customers. Unlike conventional multi-tent farmers markets where vendors are required to staff their booth for the entire day, Twin Sisters uses a cooperative mobile model: we sell fresh produce from up to a dozen small, Whatcom County farms under one stand at each of our locations. Farmer members and market staff take turns working the markets during the market season, freeing up critical labor hours for farmers during the growing season, while still allowing them to capture retail prices for their produce.

food justice.

Our work makes local food more accessible to Whatcom County’s food-insecure residents. We work with local and federal organizations to provide equal food and nutrition access to all Whatcom County residents. Accepting alternative forms of payment like EBT/SNAP encourages customers to make healthy food choices, and supports farmers by contributing to their economic success.

education.

Our programs educate and support farmers, shoppers, and members of neighborhood communities about buying and preparing local foods. When you connect with the people who grow your food, you gain a better understanding of your local food system as a whole.

advocacy.

We use our voice to raise awareness for issues affecting food access, farming, and human rights. We assist in shaping local policy by participating in events like the 2014 Foothills Food Summit, the 2019 Birchwood Food Summit, and many more.

farmer support.

We believe in building a better wage for our small local farmers. We support local economic development by creating new sales outlets and helping small farmers capture a higher percentage of the retail rate for their produce.
